NOT QUITE GONE WITH THE WIND......... Comedy films were always a great crowd pleaser at the Abbey and with the help of the cinemas boisterous cliental even a mildly amusing film would be transformed into a hilariously entertaining night out. True classic comedies such as Monty python and the Holy grail, What’s up doc, Its a mad mad world and the odd couple (to name but few) were always guaranteed to raise the cinemas roof.
Of all the comedy films screened at the Abbey, There was one particular classic which remained a firm favorite whenever it made an appearance, not surprisingly it was also the Abbeys biggest comedy box office successes of the 1970`s, This film was the inimitable Blazing saddles. A Hollywood gem which also had a certain appeal to the scouse sense of humor which no other American comedy ilm in its day could compare with.
The highlight of the film was for many the notorious Beans scene”. The patrons at the abbey could control their laughter no more than the cowboys could contain their manners, as the “long winded” beans scene finally drew to a crescendo the contagious audience laughter would often turn into mass uncontrollable hysterics, On one particular occasion some joker near the back of the hall produced what we presume to be was a fart cushion
For the audience already in stitches this was all too much to take, as several patrons were seen to spontaneously keel over between the rows of seats in acute pains of laughter. Those who did survive the ordeal without the need for abdominal surgery found themselves returning to the cinema week after week for a repeat performance of one of the best laughs had in years.
